The Dark Tower, and Other Books That Should Never Be made Into Movies!

With the release of the movie, The Dark Tower, I thought it was time I express my thoughts on the topic of books into movies. I could sum it all up in four little words, but that would make this post shorter than I want, and I wouldn’t get a chance to complain! And I don’t like missing out on that. 😀 The four words I could use are, ‘I don’t like it!’. I don’t think there’s a movie that’s been adapted from a book that I’ve liked, and Stephen King books are the prime example of that. I love Stephen King, well…not personally, I don’t even know him. But, I love his books and have ever since I picked up the very first one, which was The Dead Zone. I’ve read most of them and have mostly enjoyed them all. Except I never did make it through ‘Desperation’, one day maybe. But of all the books, The Stand is my all time favourite, so you can imagine what I said when I heard that Molly Ringwald was cast as Franny for the mini series. Molly Ringwald…..I don’t think there could have been a worse choice, except maybe Rosanne Barr, that wouldn’t be good. But anyway, when I read a good book with good characterization, I see them as if they’re real people and I can envision what they look like and how they act. So, there is NO way Molly Ringwald could ever even remotely be like the Franny I see in my head. Ok…I’ve gone off on a tangent, just the thought of it ‘grinds my gears’! So, when it comes to The Dark Tower, I’ve heard the bad reviews, the complaints that Idris Elba is Roland of Gilead, but the whole problem I have with it is that the series is HUGE! It took me from February to July to finish it all, and I have no idea how they could cram even one of the books into a 95 minute movie. So you know I won’t be going to see it. I won’t go to see any movie made from a Stephen King book, I think he’s too good of a writer to minimalize his stories into the visual form. That’s the best thing about his writing, he creates characters that come to life, without needing to see them. Oh, by the way, I don’t have anything against Molly Ringwald, she’s just not right for the role of Franny….or most other characters she’s ever done!

Ok, it’s the weekend, and I’ve been busy with real life work, but now I have time to sit a bit and finish this post. First off, The Chapter Four opened it’s doors yesterday, and I have to say, I’m honoured to be chosen as a blogger and really look forward to featuring the amazing work of all involved! But, I have never received so many blogger packs in my whole blogging career! (I love it!) I had no idea where to begin, so I picked a couple little things that I took a shine to, to show you. The ‘Triangle Necklaces’ are exclusive to TCF from {MYNX}! They come in gold(seen here), rose gold, and silver. The minimalistic look is perfect for simple summer outfits.

Also from The Chapter Four, is the KC. No 72[Sugar] head ribbon from Kyoko Couture. It’s fun and girly! It’s nice to throw aside the seriousness of life and just think happy thoughts about sunshine, good friends, and having fun at the beach. The ribbon comes in four colours and is scripted for resizing for easy fitting.

I want you to take this opportunity to see the ‘Luna’ skin in ‘peche’ tone from Avada up close and with great lighting(thank you LumiPro)! The nicely shaped lips, delicate nose and well groomed eyebrows all combine to make me beautiful! I am, aren’t I? hehe I’ve added the ‘Sydney’ Catwa applier eye shadow from La Boheme. My lashes are from the ‘Natural 2 Eyelash Pack’ from .:Mai Bilavio:. and is from a gacha at Kustom 9, which runs until August 10. My eyes are one of the ten selections from the ‘Nissa Eyes’ from Zombie Suicide. The whole look starts with the Lilo bento mesh ehad from Catwa and the Lara mesh body from Maitreya.

I took advantage of Fifty Linden Friday yesterday and grabbed the Gwen hair from Wasabi Pills.

The Deep V Neck Tee, nude, is from Tres Blah..

The bento pose I’m using is from the ‘Pleasure With Pain B’ pose set from BODYLANGUAGE SLC.

I’m on the beach at the beautiful Salt Water sim for this picture.

  1. I tend to agree with you, Liz. The only novels that I liked as films were the Tolkien trilogies – “The Hobbi”t and “Lord of the Rings”. Director Peter Jackson made a terrifically good job of bringing these rather dark and allegorical novels to life (1st and 2nd World Wars) and he did each one in three films and I think that’s where the difference is. I couldn’t imagine him being able to do the same thing with “The Silmarillion” though because it contains such an amount of Middle Earth history that it would be impossible to shoehorn into three films, let alone attempt one three hour epic movie.

I haven’t read the Stephen King “Dark Tower” novels myself although I have read a lot of his other works, my favourite is “Pet Semetry” after which I slept with the light on for weeks, followed by “Needful Things” which so exploited people’s desires for shiny objects of all sorts.

    1. I have to admit, Moz, that I’ve not read the books or seen the Lord of the Rings movies. *bows head in shame* So I can’t comment on those, but I just choose not to watch a movie that’s based on a book that I’ve already read. I have read a book after seeing the movie, and then I decide which one I like better. It’s usually the book, but it’s hard to read a book after seeing the movie since all the characters are already in my head as the actors portraying them. When I read ‘On the Beach’ by Nevil Shute I only see Gregory Peck as the lead character, which isn’t a bad thing since I love GP! 😀
