Reading Priorities

Reading Priorities

I’m not a well read person, I must admit. I love to read, but I’m very aware that my choice of books is sometimes questionable. Oh, I believe all reading is good, to immerse myself in a story and forget about reality for a time is gloriously freeing, but I know there’s a ton of literature out there that’s well worth reading. I need to open myself up to reading something that takes me to places I’ve never been. I’ve been to Stephen King’s world many many times, I’ve read about murders, in true crime and in fiction, so many times that I’m amazed it doesn’t affect me in some way. I’ve read westerns where the fast gun has been romanticized over and over again. I read romances, the bodice rippers where the endings are always happy, and I’ve read Nicholas Sparks, never managing to not cry during it. But, I have to say I don’t read enough classics! I’ve not read anything by Hans Christian Andersen or Jack London……I’ve always meant to read Louissa May Alcott, Mark Twain, and J.D Salinger, but haven’t…yet. I should discipline myself and read even one classic for every 5 general fiction books I read, then maybe I’ll consider myself well read. I guess if one considers Dr. Seuss a classic author then yes, I’m very well read, because ‘Hop on Pop’ and ‘Horton Hears a Who’ should be considered classics!

I’ve talked about reading before, so you know I love to read, but this time I mention it because KraftWork is releasing the ‘James Joyce Library’ in the March round of Deco(c)rate, and this round is sure to be a great one! The theme for March is ‘Days in Dublin’ and if the teasers are any indication this is one I’ll be getting! But back to the library, it has a land impact of 14 when in it’s entirety, which includes the books and shelving, ladder, and lights. The lights are on/off on touch and the ladder has a reading animation, which I’m not using here, as you can tell. 🙂 The set includes each part individually or as a set to rez all at once, which I did for this. The textures are highly detailed with rich colours which makes a perfectly intimate reading area. The Deco(c)rate subscription box will be delivered March 8 at noon SLT, but you only have until midnight of March 7 to subscribe! You can find a kiosk at the KraftWork main store or at the Deco(c)rate Headquarters.

I chose to settle in and read a little bit here using the ‘Double Booked’ pose and pose props from the ‘Book Lovers’ set of pose/props from Le Poppycock. The props include books, book piles and cats….every library needs at least one cat!

As for my other clutter in the library? Well, it includes books, of course! The ‘books & tea’ beside me is from tarte and the tall pile of books to my left is a group gift from Nutmeg. The ‘Sepia Peonies’ are from NOMAD and the ‘hat boxes’, ‘Hello Billy-vase’ and the ‘rug’ are from gacha sets from Apt B. The ‘Bermuda Turntable’ is from .:revival:..

And for my outfit, I’m wearing the ‘boyfriend jeans, dark wash’ and the ‘Deep V Sweater, blushed’, both from fashionably dead. The ‘Vanilla’ hair is from [monso]. And, my look all starts with the ‘Raine’ skin in ‘miel’ tone from Avada on the ‘Lilo’ bento head from Catwa and the ‘Lara’ mesh body from Maitreya.

The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes

The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes

PART ONE

The wind was a torrent of darkness among the gusty trees.
The moon was a ghostly galleon tossed upon cloudy seas.
The road was a ribbon of moonlight over the purple moor,
And the highwayman came riding—
Riding—riding—
The highwayman came riding, up to the old inn-door.

He’d a French cocked-hat on his forehead, a bunch of lace at his chin,
A coat of the claret velvet, and breeches of brown doe-skin.
They fitted with never a wrinkle. His boots were up to the thigh.
And he rode with a jewelled twinkle,
His pistol butts a-twinkle,
His rapier hilt a-twinkle, under the jewelled sky.

Over the cobbles he clattered and clashed in the dark inn-yard.
He tapped with his whip on the shutters, but all was locked and barred.
He whistled a tune to the window, and who should be waiting there
But the landlord’s black-eyed daughter,
Bess, the landlord’s daughter,
Plaiting a dark red love-knot into her long black hair.

And dark in the dark old inn-yard a stable-wicket creaked
Where Tim the ostler listened. His face was white and peaked.
His eyes were hollows of madness, his hair like mouldy hay,
But he loved the landlord’s daughter,
The landlord’s red-lipped daughter.
Dumb as a dog he listened, and he heard the robber say—

“One kiss, my bonny sweetheart, I’m after a prize to-night,
But I shall be back with the yellow gold before the morning light;
Yet, if they press me sharply, and harry me through the day,
Then look for me by moonlight,
Watch for me by moonlight,
I’ll come to thee by moonlight, though hell should bar the way.”

He rose upright in the stirrups. He scarce could reach her hand,
But she loosened her hair in the casement. His face burnt like a brand
As the black cascade of perfume came tumbling over his breast;
And he kissed its waves in the moonlight,
(O, sweet black waves in the moonlight!)
Then he tugged at his rein in the moonlight, and galloped away to the west.

PART TWO

He did not come in the dawning. He did not come at noon;
And out of the tawny sunset, before the rise of the moon,
When the road was a gypsy’s ribbon, looping the purple moor,
A red-coat troop came marching—
Marching—marching—
King George’s men came marching, up to the old inn-door.

They said no word to the landlord. They drank his ale instead.
But they gagged his daughter, and bound her, to the foot of her narrow bed.
Two of them knelt at her casement, with muskets at their side!
There was death at every window;
And hell at one dark window;
For Bess could see, through her casement, the road that he would ride.

They had tied her up to attention, with many a sniggering jest.
They had bound a musket beside her, with the muzzle beneath her breast!
“Now, keep good watch!” and they kissed her. She heard the doomed man say—
Look for me by moonlight;
Watch for me by moonlight;
I’ll come to thee by moonlight, though hell should bar the way!

She twisted her hands behind her; but all the knots held good!
She writhed her hands till her fingers were wet with sweat or blood!
They stretched and strained in the darkness, and the hours crawled by like years
Till, now, on the stroke of midnight,
Cold, on the stroke of midnight,
The tip of one finger touched it! The trigger at least was hers!

The tip of one finger touched it. She strove no more for the rest.
Up, she stood up to attention, with the muzzle beneath her breast.
She would not risk their hearing; she would not strive again;
For the road lay bare in the moonlight;
Blank and bare in the moonlight;
And the blood of her veins, in the moonlight, throbbed to her love’s refrain.

Tlot-tlot; tlot-tlot! Had they heard it? The horsehoofs ringing clear;
Tlot-tlot; tlot-tlot, in the distance? Were they deaf that they did not hear?
Down the ribbon of moonlight, over the brow of the hill,
The highwayman came riding—
Riding—riding—
The red coats looked to their priming! She stood up, straight and still.

Tlot-tlot, in the frosty silence! Tlot-tlot, in the echoing night!
Nearer he came and nearer. Her face was like a light.
Her eyes grew wide for a moment; she drew one last deep breath,
Then her finger moved in the moonlight,
Her musket shattered the moonlight,
Shattered her breast in the moonlight and warned him—with her death.

He turned. He spurred to the west; he did not know who stood
Bowed, with her head o’er the musket, drenched with her own blood!
Not till the dawn he heard it, and his face grew grey to hear
How Bess, the landlord’s daughter,
The landlord’s black-eyed daughter,
Had watched for her love in the moonlight, and died in the darkness there.

Back, he spurred like a madman, shrieking a curse to the sky,
With the white road smoking behind him and his rapier brandished high.
Blood red were his spurs in the golden noon; wine-red was his velvet coat;
When they shot him down on the highway,
Down like a dog on the highway,
And he lay in his blood on the highway, with a bunch of lace at his throat.

. . .

And still of a winter’s night, they say, when the wind is in the trees,
When the moon is a ghostly galleon tossed upon cloudy seas,
When the road is a ribbon of moonlight over the purple moor,
A highwayman comes riding—
Riding—riding—
A highwayman comes riding, up to the old inn-door.

Over the cobbles he clatters and clangs in the dark inn-yard.
He taps with his whip on the shutters, but all is locked and barred.
He whistles a tune to the window, and who should be waiting there
But the landlord’s black-eyed daughter,
Bess, the landlord’s daughter,
Plaiting a dark red love-knot into her long black hair.

I know that’s a long read, but believe me, it’s so worth it! This poem has captivated me for so many years and I just felt that this picture had this kind of mood. No, I’m not the landlord’s black eyed daughter, but I can relate to her self sacrifice, mainly because I would do anything for the people I love. I hope it would never come to that, that I have to kill myself to save anyone, but I truly would give up my life to save someone I love. Yea, I know it sounds kind of trite, and easy to say because it hasn’t come to that, but look at the people who have lost their lives, doing the most heroic of things, and not just for people they love, but for complete strangers. The people that are completely selfless when in situations that hard choices must be made, and are done in the blink of an eye, and the ones who survive these miracles will say they’d do it again with no thought of their own safety. I can only hope I act in this way if ever in this situation. I guess a person never knows how they’ll react when in dangerous situations, but I hope I’m the one helping in any way I can, instead of leading the charge, running in the opposite direction as fast as I can while yelling, ‘Run Away!’.

This shot has a lot in it, but what I really want to show is that I’m in, what I call, the master bedroom of the ‘Galveston’ home from Galland Homes. It’s part of the February Builder’s Box, which is still available in-world or on Market Place. This house has a land impact of 128 with two extremely spacious rooms for decorating ease. I’m in the second smaller room, which I’ve made into a master bedroom, complete with a fireplace and 5 windows in 3 directions, making for some amazing views while enjoying some privacy. The larger room also has a fireplace and with it’s many windows and vaulted ceilings it really makes it so versatile for many decorating styles. The front door opens out onto a small porch with a nice railing, perfect for watching the sunset in your rocking chair! Here’s a closer look at the outside!

I’m sitting sadly here, using the ‘Careless Whispers’ pose from the ‘Heartache’ pose sets from Le Poppycock. There’s 2 sets, each with 6 thoughtful or sad poses with rose pose props for that lost love. They’re available at the current round of The Chapter Four.

I have a lot of decor out here, so I’m going to keep it simple and run down what’s what and from who! 😀

And Now Back to Our Regularly Scheduled Programming

And Now Back to Our Regularly Scheduled Programming

It’s back to normal now that the holidays are over. The turkey’s gone, the gifts used and abused, and the candy bowls are empty…thankfully! So what this means is real life goes back to normal and Christmas 2017 is but a memory now, but looking back there’s one thing that I think most people will agree with. It seems to be way too stressful. It wasn’t for me this year, as it was a quiet Christmas with no large family gathering involved, and I didn’t contribute any cooking or baking, which I normally do and manage to screw up the buns and have to make a second batch. So, I got the gifts, not the most inspired ones this year, but everyone seemed to enjoy what I got them. Since we didn’t open gifts until a few days after Christmas, December 25 was a normal day for me. Coffee……dinner…..coffee……..supper…..bedtime……much like any other day for me in the winter! So tomorrow I plan on getting started on some of the winter projects I have hanging over my head, I want to try to get started early and stay at it for the morning, then if I take some quality SL time in the afternoon, at least I’ve accomplished something. But, the one thing that stresses me out when I work in the morning is making sure I get my coffee break in, because it needs to get done. Sometimes I’ll take it first…..so I can get it out of the way and not worry about it so much, but then 10 AM rolls around, which is coffee time, and I just have to take a coffee break again. It’s a must! And I never ever manage to keep a coffee break to 15 minutes. Even when I was a member of the Teamsters and punched a clock I couldn’t keep my coffee breaks under a half hour. So with me being my own boss, now I turn a coffee break into a lunch, and lunch becomes an afternoon off! It’s not a bad way to live, if I do say so myself.

So, I rambled a bit……but what the heck, it’s my blog and I can ramble if I want to! 😀 I was perusing flickr the other day, which I will admit to doing several times throughout most days, and saw a new post from Michelle Halster of Carniola Poses. She has released a new set and since I’m a fan I clicked on the link to Market Place to grab it. Then I saw the description inviting the first 5 people to comment with full SL name and get the set for free! I was commenting like my life depended on it! Michelle promptly passed along my free set of poses in-world and I was thrilled. So, here is the ‘smooth’ pose(the set contains 7 poses plus mirrors), from the ‘Find the Words’ set from Carniola Poses. Thanks so much, Michelle!

And as for my outfit here? I’ve fallen in love with the ‘Boyfriend Jeans’ from fashionably dead and available at ~uber~. The ‘Cropped Turtleneck Sweater’ is from ISON and also available ar the current round of ~uber~.

This very cute hair is ‘Corinne’ from {Limerence} and it’s available at the current round of the Kinky Event.

I’m normally not a huge fan of Mary Jane shoes, but the ‘Lydia Mary Jane Creepers’ from Livalle are just incredible! They’re compatible with the SLink and Maitreya flat fee and are available at the current round of SaNaRaE.

As always, my skin is ‘Raine’ in ‘miel’ tone from Avada on the ‘Lilo’ bento head from Catwa and the ‘Lara’ mesh body from Maitreya.

The ‘Vintage Nightstand’, the ‘Fish Bowl’ and the ‘Vintage Radio’ are from the ‘Summer is Gone’ gacha set from ..::THOR::... And the ‘Flower Embossing Chair’ is from Soy.

I made a visit to ‘Mother Road‘ on the Ludington sim and I found this little loft in the building in front of the ‘Better Call Saul’ billboard. It’s not very good in the rain and hot sun since it’s roof is pretty much shot, but it was perfect for a little bit of quiet time that I was in need of.

Just One of the Guys

Just One of the Guys

Having worked in male dominated jobs most of my life, I found out early on that it’s pretty darn great being just one of the guys. I mean, if I didn’t have them, who would I talk about work with when I’m the only woman there. So, I was accepted and welcomed by most of them and treated the same as the rest. There was always the older men who would look out for me and help me, even when I didn’t need it, and then there was the ones that resented having a woman in their midst. But overall, I felt a part of the brotherhood! 🙂 There’s nothing like sitting in a bar with a table of 6 or 7 men and seeing them at their best! I don’t know what that’s like when the men are all wearing suits and ties, but when it comes to truck drivers and oil patch workers, I got to the point where nothing shocked me! I learned never to leave my drink at the table when I left to pee, the story of a drink being stirred by something other than a stir stick was always present in my mind, and it wasn’t someones finger that did the stirring!! I could always dish out the jokes, but I also could take them…..because deep down I always knew they’d always stand by my side. I chose the group of guys I surrounded myself with because, although they were rough around the edges, they had kind hearts. I never felt I had to prove myself to them, they knew I could do the jobs they did, and as well as they could. I was just one of the guys, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.

When I decided to create a cozy area at home, I realized that there is no cozier place to be than a ‘man cave’. I mean, a ‘she shed’ is probably fine, but there’s something about surrounding myself in games and sports related things, along with the snacks and drinks to go along with it, that’s the ultimate in creature comforts. I’ve always loved watching sports, I don’t dress up in silly things all in the colour of my favourite teams, but I enjoy a good game of hockey or football(CFL of course)! I don’t mind baseball, although it’s a bit slow for me, and I have been known to watch the ‘Master’s Tournament’ in golf. I went through a phase of watching Nascar races every weekend and I used to watch tennis, but I’ve yet to watch a basketball game, I’ll have to do that one day! So, here I sit in the man cave, the popcorn is popping, and the brewski is ice cold, so let the games begin!

I’ll start with my outfit, here. I’m wearing the ‘Boyrfriend Jeans, country’ and ‘Knit Turtleneck, navy’ from fashionably dead and available at ~uber~, right now.

The ‘My Hair, Suzy’ is from [monso].

The ‘Swear Low Top Sneakers’ are from Lapointe & Bastchild, and right now there’s an exclusive texture HUD for them as a group gift.

My looks starts with the ‘Raine’ skin in ‘miel’ tone from Avada, on the ‘Lilo’ bento head from Catwa and the ‘Lara’ mesh body from Maitreya.

And as for my man cave? I’m sitting on the ‘Industrial Billiards Table’ from [zerkalo], which is available in PG and Adult at the current round of Kustom9. My pose is the #10 singles animation in the billiards table. Along with the exclusive Billiards table is the ‘Billiards Z’ gacha set! I’m using the ‘Cue Rack(RARE), Billiard Frame, Hanging Lamp, Wall Bar, and the Balls Set, here.

The ‘Standing Ashtray, ‘Dude’s Rug’, ‘Boho Guitar’, and the ‘Grungy Varnished Stool’ are from various gachas from ..::THOR::... The gacha area is near the landing point, which makes it way to easy to play them all! In the main store you’ll find all kinds of good stuff, the grungy and shabby are my favourite! 😀

My newest home is the ‘Tuscany Loft’ from DaD Design.

A Girl and Her Tractor!

A Girl and Her Tractor!

On a hot summer day the best place to be after a long day in the hay field is in the shade! Just crawl into the dark with a huge jug of water, take the hat off, and listen to the silence. I know how this feels since I grew up driving a tractor during haying season. Back in the days before cabs and air conditioning was common on a tractor and being out in the heat of the day was the only way to get the job done! I had the easy job of driving the tractor since it was Dad who was stacking the bales as they came out of the baler. He could throw hay bales from sun up to sun down and still get the cows milked. And he’d get up the next day and we’d do it all again! Those were tough days and I often wonder how he did that, he never had a body builder body, but he was so strong…and he could put in long days. Whenever haying time comes around I always feel melancholy about it. There’s no smell like the fresh cut hay drying in the hot sun, and having the hope of getting finished before rain! The saying, ‘make hay while the sun shines’ is never as true as when on the farm in July!

I want to point out that the huge amount of empty beer cans here is a little shocking! There’s never any alcohol consumed when working on or around heavy machinery here, it’s just wrong!! After the day was done though, Dad could slam back a bottle of beer in 15 seconds flat!! 😀

The ‘Broke Fixer Up Tractor’ was such a surprise to find on Market Place! It’s from ..::TASTY::.. and it’s 100% mesh with materials enabled and only 2 LI. It has 7 animations with props, plus it has broken idling sounds too! And believe me, it’s not running good!

I’m dressed for tractor driving here! I’ve got the Daryl Hair and Cap from Opale and fame femme. This is from the browns hair pack, the cap can be worn or not, with or without patches, and it’s HUD driven with 10 colours!

The ‘Mindy Tank’ from Just BECAUSE is at the new round of ~uber~ and the fatpack is huge with colours and options!

The ‘Carrie Denim Shorts’ are from /erratic/ and the scarf is optional plus the scarf and back pockets are HUD driven with lots of colour options.

The ‘Loretta Bandana Scarf’ is part of a necklace and bandana set from Chain. The bandana is HUD driven with the 3 colours.

I can never resist an opportunity to wear my favourite work boots, the Bossy Boots from fashionably dead. I know they’ve been around a long time, but I think they’ve stood the test of time and still look great. I have the sock add ons with them.

The rest of me is the Lilo bento head from Catwa, with the ‘Luna’ skin in ‘peche’ tone from Avada(formerly Sinful Curves Skins), along with the Lara mesh body from Maitreya.

I’m in the shed at the Honeycomb sim, home of the hive main store, where joining the group gives rezz rights! I love that!
