The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes

The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes

PART ONE

The wind was a torrent of darkness among the gusty trees.
The moon was a ghostly galleon tossed upon cloudy seas.
The road was a ribbon of moonlight over the purple moor,
And the highwayman came riding—
Riding—riding—
The highwayman came riding, up to the old inn-door.

He’d a French cocked-hat on his forehead, a bunch of lace at his chin,
A coat of the claret velvet, and breeches of brown doe-skin.
They fitted with never a wrinkle. His boots were up to the thigh.
And he rode with a jewelled twinkle,
His pistol butts a-twinkle,
His rapier hilt a-twinkle, under the jewelled sky.

Over the cobbles he clattered and clashed in the dark inn-yard.
He tapped with his whip on the shutters, but all was locked and barred.
He whistled a tune to the window, and who should be waiting there
But the landlord’s black-eyed daughter,
Bess, the landlord’s daughter,
Plaiting a dark red love-knot into her long black hair.

And dark in the dark old inn-yard a stable-wicket creaked
Where Tim the ostler listened. His face was white and peaked.
His eyes were hollows of madness, his hair like mouldy hay,
But he loved the landlord’s daughter,
The landlord’s red-lipped daughter.
Dumb as a dog he listened, and he heard the robber say—

“One kiss, my bonny sweetheart, I’m after a prize to-night,
But I shall be back with the yellow gold before the morning light;
Yet, if they press me sharply, and harry me through the day,
Then look for me by moonlight,
Watch for me by moonlight,
I’ll come to thee by moonlight, though hell should bar the way.”

He rose upright in the stirrups. He scarce could reach her hand,
But she loosened her hair in the casement. His face burnt like a brand
As the black cascade of perfume came tumbling over his breast;
And he kissed its waves in the moonlight,
(O, sweet black waves in the moonlight!)
Then he tugged at his rein in the moonlight, and galloped away to the west.

PART TWO

He did not come in the dawning. He did not come at noon;
And out of the tawny sunset, before the rise of the moon,
When the road was a gypsy’s ribbon, looping the purple moor,
A red-coat troop came marching—
Marching—marching—
King George’s men came marching, up to the old inn-door.

They said no word to the landlord. They drank his ale instead.
But they gagged his daughter, and bound her, to the foot of her narrow bed.
Two of them knelt at her casement, with muskets at their side!
There was death at every window;
And hell at one dark window;
For Bess could see, through her casement, the road that he would ride.

They had tied her up to attention, with many a sniggering jest.
They had bound a musket beside her, with the muzzle beneath her breast!
“Now, keep good watch!” and they kissed her. She heard the doomed man say—
Look for me by moonlight;
Watch for me by moonlight;
I’ll come to thee by moonlight, though hell should bar the way!

She twisted her hands behind her; but all the knots held good!
She writhed her hands till her fingers were wet with sweat or blood!
They stretched and strained in the darkness, and the hours crawled by like years
Till, now, on the stroke of midnight,
Cold, on the stroke of midnight,
The tip of one finger touched it! The trigger at least was hers!

The tip of one finger touched it. She strove no more for the rest.
Up, she stood up to attention, with the muzzle beneath her breast.
She would not risk their hearing; she would not strive again;
For the road lay bare in the moonlight;
Blank and bare in the moonlight;
And the blood of her veins, in the moonlight, throbbed to her love’s refrain.

Tlot-tlot; tlot-tlot! Had they heard it? The horsehoofs ringing clear;
Tlot-tlot; tlot-tlot, in the distance? Were they deaf that they did not hear?
Down the ribbon of moonlight, over the brow of the hill,
The highwayman came riding—
Riding—riding—
The red coats looked to their priming! She stood up, straight and still.

Tlot-tlot, in the frosty silence! Tlot-tlot, in the echoing night!
Nearer he came and nearer. Her face was like a light.
Her eyes grew wide for a moment; she drew one last deep breath,
Then her finger moved in the moonlight,
Her musket shattered the moonlight,
Shattered her breast in the moonlight and warned him—with her death.

He turned. He spurred to the west; he did not know who stood
Bowed, with her head o’er the musket, drenched with her own blood!
Not till the dawn he heard it, and his face grew grey to hear
How Bess, the landlord’s daughter,
The landlord’s black-eyed daughter,
Had watched for her love in the moonlight, and died in the darkness there.

Back, he spurred like a madman, shrieking a curse to the sky,
With the white road smoking behind him and his rapier brandished high.
Blood red were his spurs in the golden noon; wine-red was his velvet coat;
When they shot him down on the highway,
Down like a dog on the highway,
And he lay in his blood on the highway, with a bunch of lace at his throat.

. . .

And still of a winter’s night, they say, when the wind is in the trees,
When the moon is a ghostly galleon tossed upon cloudy seas,
When the road is a ribbon of moonlight over the purple moor,
A highwayman comes riding—
Riding—riding—
A highwayman comes riding, up to the old inn-door.

Over the cobbles he clatters and clangs in the dark inn-yard.
He taps with his whip on the shutters, but all is locked and barred.
He whistles a tune to the window, and who should be waiting there
But the landlord’s black-eyed daughter,
Bess, the landlord’s daughter,
Plaiting a dark red love-knot into her long black hair.

I know that’s a long read, but believe me, it’s so worth it! This poem has captivated me for so many years and I just felt that this picture had this kind of mood. No, I’m not the landlord’s black eyed daughter, but I can relate to her self sacrifice, mainly because I would do anything for the people I love. I hope it would never come to that, that I have to kill myself to save anyone, but I truly would give up my life to save someone I love. Yea, I know it sounds kind of trite, and easy to say because it hasn’t come to that, but look at the people who have lost their lives, doing the most heroic of things, and not just for people they love, but for complete strangers. The people that are completely selfless when in situations that hard choices must be made, and are done in the blink of an eye, and the ones who survive these miracles will say they’d do it again with no thought of their own safety. I can only hope I act in this way if ever in this situation. I guess a person never knows how they’ll react when in dangerous situations, but I hope I’m the one helping in any way I can, instead of leading the charge, running in the opposite direction as fast as I can while yelling, ‘Run Away!’.

This shot has a lot in it, but what I really want to show is that I’m in, what I call, the master bedroom of the ‘Galveston’ home from Galland Homes. It’s part of the February Builder’s Box, which is still available in-world or on Market Place. This house has a land impact of 128 with two extremely spacious rooms for decorating ease. I’m in the second smaller room, which I’ve made into a master bedroom, complete with a fireplace and 5 windows in 3 directions, making for some amazing views while enjoying some privacy. The larger room also has a fireplace and with it’s many windows and vaulted ceilings it really makes it so versatile for many decorating styles. The front door opens out onto a small porch with a nice railing, perfect for watching the sunset in your rocking chair! Here’s a closer look at the outside!

I’m sitting sadly here, using the ‘Careless Whispers’ pose from the ‘Heartache’ pose sets from Le Poppycock. There’s 2 sets, each with 6 thoughtful or sad poses with rose pose props for that lost love. They’re available at the current round of The Chapter Four.

I have a lot of decor out here, so I’m going to keep it simple and run down what’s what and from who! 😀

October

October

“I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.”

~L.M. Montgomery~ Anne of Green Gables

I live in the prairies which I’m sure everyone assumes is bleak, flat, and unexciting. Sure, we don’t have a leafing season like parts of Ontario does, but it’s pretty here in the fall, nonetheless. I’m in a fairly rolling area with trees sprinkled throughout, the trees being mainly quaking aspens. I just call them poplars, but no matter the name, they are pretty this time of year. The leaves turn the most vibrant yellow and when the sun hits a bluff of them it positively glows. The whole countryside is really pretty right now, the grasses have turned different shades of browns, yellows, and golds while the chokecherries turn a dark red. Unfortunately the maples we have here usually just submit to the cooler temperatures and the leaves turn an odd flesh colour and fall to the ground with a whimper. I think no matter where you live there’s something special about autumn, it’s something that inexplicably makes perfectly sane people ingest large quantities of pumpkin spice everything!

Starting yesterday and going for one week is the ForMax event, which is raising funds for one of SL’s own who has come upon some difficult times. There’s a whole lot of talented designers taking part with some really great items. Galland Homes is there with the ‘Keys Bungalow’. It’s an adorable one room home with high ceilings, lots of windows, and a roomy veranda on the front. It’s got a nice low land impact of 42 and is perfect for a beach house or, like I did here, a little retreat out in the country. I want to point out the incredible detailing the front door has, the etching on the glass really sets this little house apart. I always believe that it doesn’t take a big house to make a home…..all you need is love to do that. The ForMax event runs until October 10.

I’ve managed to clutter up the yard pretty good, but it’s all good stuff! I’ll start with the cute ‘Arya Wooden Forest Friends’ from Serenity Style and available now at Lootbox. I scored the RARE which included the two owls and a fox and then I had to play for the others, I put another fox and a bunny out here.

The ‘wagon wheel, stained’ is from tarte and available at Salem. That’s a great event for all kinds of autumn and Halloween things.

Industrie is a new event that opened the other day, it’s all things minimal and industrial! It’s a collection of designers from all genres, so there is something for everyone. I picked up the ‘Simple Ladder’ from [Isuka].

The ‘pumpkin wagon, planter, and crate all come from a gacha from dust bunny & tenshi.

The ‘lanterns and wooden post’ are from Calm. and for the life of me I can’t remember where I got it and I can’t find a land mark for their main store. I landed in a bare lot. If you find a land mark that works for them drop me a line, I like their things. 🙂

The ‘Bicycle, yella’ is from a gacha set from Bueno. It’s decor only, pretty much like my bicycle in real life!

The dog that’s laying on the veranda is some stray that’s wondered by. He’s from ‘The Freak Shelter’ gacha from .::THOR::.. All the gacha are in their own little building at the main store, so it’s way too easy to get sidetracked while blogging! I have to stay home while I write! 🙂

The ‘rocking chair’ on the veranda is from [we’re Closed].

The frame behind the owl on the left is from the ‘Secret Sanctuary’ gacha set from [Krescendo] and available at The Gacha Guardians.

The ‘farmhouse mailbox’ is from Vagabond. and the ‘Beach broken chair’ on the veranda is from a gacha from PewPew.

The ‘Little Tree, fall’ is from keke.

All of the other trees are the Aspens and Aspen saplings from Botanical.

The ‘wild sword grass’ is from Kidd Creation and all of the other grass is from the dry and summer,rich meadow grass from Raindale.

Not All Clutter is Equal

Not All Clutter is Equal

I must admit to not being the best of housekeepers. I prefer being outside, so it gets a little bit neglected in the summer. When I think of clutter in my real life compared to my Second Life clutter, it’s like comparing apples to oranges. What I should do is recreate this photograph in real life! I do happen to have a cardboard box of books ready to go for donation, it’s waiting patiently! And believe it or not, my boots are even beside it, but they’re the boots I wear when I’m out doing animal things, so needless to say there’s a few things stuck on them that I’m sure no one wants to see. I do have a vintage radio I could set beside the boots, it’s red and still works. I don’t have a backpack though, although I could borrow one, but it’s probably almost worn out and in need of repairs. I have a couple houseplants, but the Hoya is really big and has grown into my window blind, so I can’t move it, but the Joshua Tree could sit beside the backpack, and it does look pretty good. I wonder how many Canadians have a Joshua Tree for a house plant? I’ll get one of my tea cups and saucers out to add to the collection, I love my jadeite in the ‘Alice’ pattern by Fire King! I do have a coat rack by my door, but it’s usually covered in hats, toques, and a chore coat. Anything that has the word ‘chore’ in it isn’t photograph material! Now, once it’s all gathered and placed I have to wait a week to get a light coating of dust on it, to make it look like the rest of the things in here! The trick will be getting a windlight for nice shadows, real life windlights just aren’t as good as SL’s!

I started out planning a blog post featuring the ‘Gideon Boots’ from NX-Nardcotix, but after many attempts at getting a pose I liked and an interesting angle I couldn’t seem to get it right and gave up and made them decor! A girl can’t wear her boots 24/7, even though she may want to! They fit the SLink, Maitreya, and Belleza mesh feet for the women and the feet for the men’s mesh body ‘David‘ also from NX-Nardoctix. Plus there’s an unrigged pair, so pretty much anyone can wear them. They come in 7 colours and are exclusive to Shoetopia! Also from NX-Nardcotix is the ‘Finley Backpack’! It’s rigged for the ‘David’ body and also comes unrigged and this one I’m showing is the ‘static’ version. It also comes in 7 colours of rich and smooth leather. The backpack is exclusive to Men Only Monthly, which runs until October 15.

Also shown here is the ‘Vintage Bakelite Radio’ from KraftWork, the ‘book pile, leather, brown’ from .:revival:., the ‘cardboard box with books’ from [bauwerk], the ‘coat rack’ and ‘firewood basket’ are from Dust Bunny, and the house plants from [what next]. Oh…and the tea cup is from the ‘hard to find set, mint’ from [keke].

I guess I better get working on my housework, maybe Monday! 😀

I Die a Little Inside

I Die a Little Inside

A little part of me dies when I see suffering! I want to heal the injured and cure the sick. I want to take away the suffering and ease the pain of others, be it human or animal. I wish nothing had to endure what this sometimes harsh life puts upon us. I face a decision today, and not one I take lightly. But, for me, the decision is made with love, to bring peace and ease the pain of one that I love. I prepare for the inevitable, I weep with the sorrow of losing a part of my family, for my pets are my family! I’ve been through this many times in my life and it never gets easier, but I know in my heart that it’s the right thing to do. So, today I have few words, for I’ve died a little inside!

I stayed home last night, just taking some quiet time to think and reflect. I was planning on making this a humourous post, but with RL things going on, I feel no humour. So, I’ll just get to the business at hand. First off, LEGAL INSANITY has released the ‘Katja Lingerie” exclusive to the Frou Frou event. This event specializes in original mesh lingerie and runs until October 8. The ‘Katja Lingerie’ from LI comes in lots of colours, and if you get the fatpack there’s lots of exclusives with that…and all kinds of customizing is possible! It’s fitted for the SLink, Belleza, and Maitreya mesh bodies and has kind of a vintage feel to it. This texture here is exclusive to the fatpack!

I want to jump to the home decor info now, to bring attention to the ‘Dreamers Projector’ from [ keke ]. When advanced lighting is enabled it projects the moon onto the surface it’s aimed at. It makes for a really nice atmosphere in a room or even outside on a screen or the wall of a building. Also from [ keke ] is the ‘Autumn Bell Jar, moth’. It’s a surprisingly large jar holding a beautiful array of leaves, branch, and moths and it’s perfect for fall decorating. [ keke ] always has incredible things to add to your home to make it that little bit more cozy!

The ‘WAKANA’ hair is from Argrace. I love the little pieces that move with me as I move!

My look all starts with the ‘Luna’ skin in ‘miel’ tone from Avada, on the ‘Lilo’ bento meah head from Catwa and the ‘Lara’ mesh body from Maitreya.

The house plants to the left are from {what next} and the outline to the right of me is the ‘Leather Chair & Pillow’ in caramel from brocante. You can’t see it well, but I know it’s there!

I’ve become a huge admirer of the poses from Del May. They convey emotion and look so natural. This is the ‘Piano Shoulders’ pose.

Century Farm

Century Farm

This year marks the 100th Anniversary of the farm being in the family! I’ve lived here most of my life and can’t imagine living anywhere else! The ground I walk on holds the history of my family and it all tells a tale when I look around and remember the past. It’s all changed with time, my years here have seen changes, so I can’t imagine the memories my Mum must have now that she’s living in the house she grew up in. The actual farm yard is massive and takes more work than I have the energy to do most days, but I keep at it and try to make it the showcase it’s always been. My Granddad spent countless hours making it look it’s best, if for no other reason than pride in the work. The massive amount of trees to take care of is the one overwhelming job that I happen to be working on now. With 100 year old maples and row upon row of hedges, the maintenance is an ongoing job, but I work at it slowly and do what I can. I’m not sure what the future holds for the farm. I have no children and my sister doesn’t either, so this is probably the end of the line for it, at least as far as this family goes! But, things change and evolve and the one thing that never stops is time marching on!

I’ve created a little area here for me to take time to enjoy the garden and ponder life, just as my real life home has areas such as this! The latest group gift from KraftWork was the start of it and I just added things I’ve gathered up over time. The ‘Water on Tap’ hydrant set includes three rustic taps with varying degrees of aging, ranging from new to middle age and then the aged, which is seen here! It seems to have developed a drip, which I’ll have to get Dad to have a look at! ;D It has a land impact of 2 and is copy/mod! The group is 25L$ to join, which is a mere pittance when you see the incredible group gifts that are released regularly!

I’m going to do something I’ve never done before on my blog, and that’s listing the rest of the items in the scene in bullet form. This will save me some time so I can get out to tackle the work again this morning! 🙂

* also from KraftWork is the Bakelite Vintage Radio from the Vintage Radio Gacha set.

* the ‘Garden Retreat’ is from .:revival:.. I just adore their rustic and homey garden and home decor. Also from .:revival:. is the Book Pile, leather, which is part of a gacha set.

* the ‘Garden Gate’ behind the garden retreat is from [we’re CLOSED].

* the watering can is from the ‘Oh My Garden’ gacha set from Shine. I looked all over the main store to see if it was still available, but I couldn’t find a gacha. So I’m not sure if you can still get it.

* the ‘antique jug of flowers’ is from Amala.

* you can see a little bit of the ‘meadow grass’ from Raindale! This is the ‘summer, rich’ style and it’s so lush and green!

*the flip flops, black/white is from the ‘Poolside’ gacha set from Pilot and available til the end of the month at The Arcade.

* you can just see one corner of the ‘Huguette Bag’ from C’est la vie. It was the FLF items this past week.
