The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes

The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes

PART ONE

The wind was a torrent of darkness among the gusty trees.
The moon was a ghostly galleon tossed upon cloudy seas.
The road was a ribbon of moonlight over the purple moor,
And the highwayman came riding—
Riding—riding—
The highwayman came riding, up to the old inn-door.

He’d a French cocked-hat on his forehead, a bunch of lace at his chin,
A coat of the claret velvet, and breeches of brown doe-skin.
They fitted with never a wrinkle. His boots were up to the thigh.
And he rode with a jewelled twinkle,
His pistol butts a-twinkle,
His rapier hilt a-twinkle, under the jewelled sky.

Over the cobbles he clattered and clashed in the dark inn-yard.
He tapped with his whip on the shutters, but all was locked and barred.
He whistled a tune to the window, and who should be waiting there
But the landlord’s black-eyed daughter,
Bess, the landlord’s daughter,
Plaiting a dark red love-knot into her long black hair.

And dark in the dark old inn-yard a stable-wicket creaked
Where Tim the ostler listened. His face was white and peaked.
His eyes were hollows of madness, his hair like mouldy hay,
But he loved the landlord’s daughter,
The landlord’s red-lipped daughter.
Dumb as a dog he listened, and he heard the robber say—

“One kiss, my bonny sweetheart, I’m after a prize to-night,
But I shall be back with the yellow gold before the morning light;
Yet, if they press me sharply, and harry me through the day,
Then look for me by moonlight,
Watch for me by moonlight,
I’ll come to thee by moonlight, though hell should bar the way.”

He rose upright in the stirrups. He scarce could reach her hand,
But she loosened her hair in the casement. His face burnt like a brand
As the black cascade of perfume came tumbling over his breast;
And he kissed its waves in the moonlight,
(O, sweet black waves in the moonlight!)
Then he tugged at his rein in the moonlight, and galloped away to the west.

PART TWO

He did not come in the dawning. He did not come at noon;
And out of the tawny sunset, before the rise of the moon,
When the road was a gypsy’s ribbon, looping the purple moor,
A red-coat troop came marching—
Marching—marching—
King George’s men came marching, up to the old inn-door.

They said no word to the landlord. They drank his ale instead.
But they gagged his daughter, and bound her, to the foot of her narrow bed.
Two of them knelt at her casement, with muskets at their side!
There was death at every window;
And hell at one dark window;
For Bess could see, through her casement, the road that he would ride.

They had tied her up to attention, with many a sniggering jest.
They had bound a musket beside her, with the muzzle beneath her breast!
“Now, keep good watch!” and they kissed her. She heard the doomed man say—
Look for me by moonlight;
Watch for me by moonlight;
I’ll come to thee by moonlight, though hell should bar the way!

She twisted her hands behind her; but all the knots held good!
She writhed her hands till her fingers were wet with sweat or blood!
They stretched and strained in the darkness, and the hours crawled by like years
Till, now, on the stroke of midnight,
Cold, on the stroke of midnight,
The tip of one finger touched it! The trigger at least was hers!

The tip of one finger touched it. She strove no more for the rest.
Up, she stood up to attention, with the muzzle beneath her breast.
She would not risk their hearing; she would not strive again;
For the road lay bare in the moonlight;
Blank and bare in the moonlight;
And the blood of her veins, in the moonlight, throbbed to her love’s refrain.

Tlot-tlot; tlot-tlot! Had they heard it? The horsehoofs ringing clear;
Tlot-tlot; tlot-tlot, in the distance? Were they deaf that they did not hear?
Down the ribbon of moonlight, over the brow of the hill,
The highwayman came riding—
Riding—riding—
The red coats looked to their priming! She stood up, straight and still.

Tlot-tlot, in the frosty silence! Tlot-tlot, in the echoing night!
Nearer he came and nearer. Her face was like a light.
Her eyes grew wide for a moment; she drew one last deep breath,
Then her finger moved in the moonlight,
Her musket shattered the moonlight,
Shattered her breast in the moonlight and warned him—with her death.

He turned. He spurred to the west; he did not know who stood
Bowed, with her head o’er the musket, drenched with her own blood!
Not till the dawn he heard it, and his face grew grey to hear
How Bess, the landlord’s daughter,
The landlord’s black-eyed daughter,
Had watched for her love in the moonlight, and died in the darkness there.

Back, he spurred like a madman, shrieking a curse to the sky,
With the white road smoking behind him and his rapier brandished high.
Blood red were his spurs in the golden noon; wine-red was his velvet coat;
When they shot him down on the highway,
Down like a dog on the highway,
And he lay in his blood on the highway, with a bunch of lace at his throat.

. . .

And still of a winter’s night, they say, when the wind is in the trees,
When the moon is a ghostly galleon tossed upon cloudy seas,
When the road is a ribbon of moonlight over the purple moor,
A highwayman comes riding—
Riding—riding—
A highwayman comes riding, up to the old inn-door.

Over the cobbles he clatters and clangs in the dark inn-yard.
He taps with his whip on the shutters, but all is locked and barred.
He whistles a tune to the window, and who should be waiting there
But the landlord’s black-eyed daughter,
Bess, the landlord’s daughter,
Plaiting a dark red love-knot into her long black hair.

I know that’s a long read, but believe me, it’s so worth it! This poem has captivated me for so many years and I just felt that this picture had this kind of mood. No, I’m not the landlord’s black eyed daughter, but I can relate to her self sacrifice, mainly because I would do anything for the people I love. I hope it would never come to that, that I have to kill myself to save anyone, but I truly would give up my life to save someone I love. Yea, I know it sounds kind of trite, and easy to say because it hasn’t come to that, but look at the people who have lost their lives, doing the most heroic of things, and not just for people they love, but for complete strangers. The people that are completely selfless when in situations that hard choices must be made, and are done in the blink of an eye, and the ones who survive these miracles will say they’d do it again with no thought of their own safety. I can only hope I act in this way if ever in this situation. I guess a person never knows how they’ll react when in dangerous situations, but I hope I’m the one helping in any way I can, instead of leading the charge, running in the opposite direction as fast as I can while yelling, ‘Run Away!’.

This shot has a lot in it, but what I really want to show is that I’m in, what I call, the master bedroom of the ‘Galveston’ home from Galland Homes. It’s part of the February Builder’s Box, which is still available in-world or on Market Place. This house has a land impact of 128 with two extremely spacious rooms for decorating ease. I’m in the second smaller room, which I’ve made into a master bedroom, complete with a fireplace and 5 windows in 3 directions, making for some amazing views while enjoying some privacy. The larger room also has a fireplace and with it’s many windows and vaulted ceilings it really makes it so versatile for many decorating styles. The front door opens out onto a small porch with a nice railing, perfect for watching the sunset in your rocking chair! Here’s a closer look at the outside!

I’m sitting sadly here, using the ‘Careless Whispers’ pose from the ‘Heartache’ pose sets from Le Poppycock. There’s 2 sets, each with 6 thoughtful or sad poses with rose pose props for that lost love. They’re available at the current round of The Chapter Four.

I have a lot of decor out here, so I’m going to keep it simple and run down what’s what and from who! 😀

Recurring Dreams

Recurring Dreams

I’ve always had vivid dreams and through the years I go through recurring dreams that just never seem to stop. I’ve been having this one dream for about 3 years now and I’m not sure if I’m supposed to learn from it or anything, but it seems like I’m not getting the hint if there is one. It all starts with taking a trip somewhere, sometimes I fly, sometimes a bus, and one time it was even in a space ship, I think I watch Ancient Aliens too much! 🙂 So anyway, I’ve gone on this trip and stayed there an undetermined amount of time and as I’m preparing to go back home I realize that I have too much stuff to fit in my luggage. I try to pack up my belongings in the hotel room or wherever I’m staying and I can’t fit it all in. And the bags I brought with me in the first place were too many as it was. I feel this panic inside that I can’t take all my belongings with me and then the panic that if I do get it all packed I’ll never be able to carry it all, which then leads to the worry of being late for my flight or ride or whatever. When I first started having this dream I woke up all sweaty and panicked like it was a life threatening disaster, now I wake up from it just a little unsettled, I think I must be getting used to it. This isn’t the first recurring dream I’ve had for an extended period of time. Back when I was on the road I had a recurring dream about two or three times a week. It was about me losing my teeth….now, I’ll understand if you laugh at that, but it was a weird thing to have happen that often. In the dream I’d put my hands under my mouth and try to catch the teeth as they dropped out. It went on for about a year and then out of the blue, it stopped. I am a believer that dreams are your subconscious trying to tell you something, so I had done some reading on the subject and found out that this dream means that there is something going on in your life that needs fixing, that the status quo isn’t right. Well, when I read that it all made sense. I wasn’t where I was meant to be and once a few major things changed in my life the dreams of my teeth falling out had gone away. So I’m not sure what this one is telling me, but I wish I could just learn my lesson and move on!

So, I’m sitting here on a train platform in Germany with way too much baggage to carry and I had to leave some of my things behind, needless to say it’s like a bad dream! INDUSTRIE is a new event in Second Life and it’s one that I was looking forward to for quite awhile leading up to it. KraftWork is one of the sponsors of it and they have released the U Bahn Backdrops gacha set. This is a set of fictional German train station backdrops, signage and benches and it’s a really neat set. There’s 12 common and one RARE to play for. I’m using the ‘Tramhaltestelle Bahnhof’ backdrop with dark benches and the ‘Meine Fantasie XXX’ sign. INDUSTRIE runs until October 23.

I looked far and wide to gather up the luggage here! I’ll start with the far left, the ‘Travel Luggage’ from ::Tartessos Arts::Furniture is in the back and the ‘suitcase’ is fron is from the ‘Adalyne Autumn Collection from Serenity Style and available at the current round of Tres Chic. Underneath the suitcase is the trunk that holds the ‘Vintage Suitcase’ stack from {what next} which is sitting two seats to the right of me. The ‘hat box’ is from a gacha from Apple Fall, as is the ‘worn suitcase’ behind it, the ‘plaid suitcase’ on the floor in front and the other ‘worn suitcase’ to the right of me on the floor. The large trunk right beside me with the hat box on it is from the ‘Lazy Weekend’ gacha set from ::THOR::. The bag at my feet is the ‘Travel Bag, another version’ from a gacha set that I coudn’t find at the fame femme main store. So I’m not sure if it’s still available.

The pillows are from the ‘Slumber Party’ gacha set from Tres Blah.

And as for my comfortable travelling outfit? It starts with the ‘Laura Sweater’ from erratic. I put one of the six colours of ‘Ribbed Knit Leggings’ from Simply Sage on since I’ll be doing lots of sitting on this trip. The ‘Gideon Boots’ are from NX-Nardcotix and exclusive to Shoetopia. The ‘Arwen Hair’ is from Mina Hair. As always I’m wearing the ‘Luna’ skin in ‘miel’ tone from Avada on the ‘Lilo’ bento mesh head from Catwa and the ‘Lara’ mesh body from Maitreya.

And last but not least….the pose! This is a pose from the ‘School Days’ sets A & B from Le Poppycock. The set is actually a pose/prop set with school desks and other education paraphernalia attachments to make yourself young again and goofing off in class. It’s available at the ULTRA event until October 8.

The Setting Sun

The Setting Sun

The setting sun, and music at the close,
As the last taste of sweets, is sweetest last,
Writ in remembrance more than things long past.

~William Shakespeare~

The writing of Shakespeare is stunning in rhythm and wording, but there are times I really wonder just what he’s talking about. But, regardless of whether I fully grasp it all completely and correctly, the beauty of his prose isn’t lost on me.

When I was planning this little setting I wanted to make it look cozy and inviting. I kind of fancy the idea of two rocking chairs set out to watch the setting sun. It’s been romanticized, you know, the old couple that have been through everything life could throw at them and they can still sit together and watch a setting sun, comfortable in being together and witnessing nature at it’s finest and maybe even holding hands. It sounds nice, I think, but just because I have no one to sit in the other rocking chair, I can still enjoy the setting sun. I’d have a tasty beverage and keep my book handy to read or maybe write in my journal. And as the summer wanes and the evenings cool, it’ll be nice to have a sweater on and enjoy the stars coming out. It makes me smile just thinking about it.

Okay, the ‘Eastmont Shed’ from Raindale is the focal point of this post, and it’s such a cute little dwelling that I really want to move in. I’ve chosen to show you the back door, it’s the less pretty of the two doors, but I love the rolling barn door at the back. I’m a country girl, what can I say! 😀 It has a footprint of 7x9m and a land impact of 23. The flower boxes on the window sill are included but optional and they add 1 to the LI. The doors are scripted with the ‘Kool Door System’ and have all of the access capabilities it offers. The ‘Eastmont Shed’ is available now exclusively at Shiny Shabby.

I’ve got a few things strewn about here, which is usual for me. To start with, I’ve added the ‘Twinkling Ivy’ from Dysfunctionality, I want to make sure everyone knows that it’s not part of the shed. 🙂

The rocking chairs are from [we’re CLOSED]. The pillows are colour change via drop down menu and they have lots of sits for both men and women. Also from [we’re CLOSED] is the ‘large shrub, green’.

The ‘Andretti Recycled Table, RARE’ is from Serenity Style and is available at the current round of the Tres Chic event There’s six common and one rare to play for.

The ‘Sunflowers Pitcher and ‘Sunflower Bicycle-Decor’ are both from {what next}.

The ‘Boho Guitar’ and the ‘Grunge Barrel Seat’ are both from the ‘Freak Shelter’ gacha set from THOR and should be at the main store now after it’s stint at Cosmopolitan.

The ‘Vouvont Pitcher, Dark Zinc’ is from Calm..

The ‘Wild Oak’ and ‘Norway Maple’ trees are both from The Little Branch.

And last but not least, all of the grass is from Raindale and available at the main store. I’ve used the Summer, soft and the dry grasses for this look.
